British Violin Making Association Study Day and AGM 25 November 2018
Ashmolean Museum, Oxford: 10am - 5pm.

When Harry Mairson came into contact with François Denis Traité de Lutherie he realised that the Euclidean Geometry forms of Cremonese instruments could be expressed through a simple computer code. When this is understood, it allows a violin maker to manipulate numerical values in order to adapt designs and develop new ideas with enormous control over the system, and the ability to rework designs countless times over. By contrast, working with pen and paper requires a significantly bigger investment of time and is prone to error.

Digital Amati does not remove the Renaissance geometry from instrument making, instead it allows this to be explored with much greater dynamism, helping instrument makers to conceptualise ideal forms of instrument that are locked within the same geometrical rules as the Cremonese masters.

Harry's workshop will focus around the Andrea Amati form to demonstrate how it came into being, and to understand how it can be manipulated to create other classic forms, as well as to create entirely new designs.
